7* Normal starter returned from injury/rest.
1 Hardy was benched midway through the third quarter of the Week 2 game of the Eagles after throwing four interceptions and fumbling three times. Backup Frank Tripucka injured his knee three plays later; Hardy re-entered and threw four more interceptions.
2 McHan suspended two games and fined $3,000 for saying “he didn’t feel like playing” during 1956 Week 8 loss to Steelers. Associated Press, November 21, 1956: “A reliable source said that McHan refused plays that were sent into the game Sunday; that he had gone against instructions from the bench before; and that at one stage of the game Sunday he refused to return to the field and only menacing gestures from teammates on the sidelines forced him in.”
3 Roach relieved in the second half and threw four touchdowns.
4 Johnson’s two-year Army hitch started in July 1967. He spent the next two years commuting from his chemical research job in Virginia to St. Louis for every Wednesday practice and Sunday game.
5 Coach Bud Wilkinson refused Bidwell’s request to change quarterbacks and was fired.
6 Loyd was benched at halftime after being sacked 6 times while completing none of his 9 passes. He never played another down in the NFL.
7 Lomax retired before the 1990 season without playing again.
8 Esiason would have earned between $300,000 and $350,000 in incentives had he played the final two games of the season.

1 The Rams platooned Van Brocklin and Waterfield until Waterfield retired after the 1952 season.
2 Van Brocklin was benched after his first pass of the 1956 opener against the Eagles wobbled, was intercepted, and returned for a touchdown. It turned out that Van Brocklin’s arm was hit on the pass, but Rams coach Sid Gillman stuck with Wade for another week anyway.
3 Dils was one of a dozen Rams regulars who did not strike.
